Point Buy 5e Calculator

Points remaining: 27 / 27

Total spent: 0 · Remaining: 27

Racial / background bonuses (optional)
Custom bonus per ability (−2 to +4)

Bonuses are free and are added after point buy. Under the 2024 rules (and Tasha's optional rule) you place +2 and +1 on two different abilities. A base 15 can reach 17 with a +2.

Spend your 27 points, add your +2 and +1, and the calculator shows every score and modifier as you go. Your build is saved in this browser, so you can close the tab and pick it up later.

How point buy works

Every ability starts at 8. Raising a score costs points, and the top two steps cost more: 13 to 14 costs 2 points, and 14 to 15 costs 2 more. You can't buy anything above 15 or drop anything below 8. When the counter reaches zero, your array is done.

The full cost table, example builds for four classes and the 2024 rule changes are on the point buy calculator page.

Questions

What is point buy in 5e?

It's a way to set ability scores without dice. You get 27 points to spend across your six abilities, so every character at the table starts on the same footing.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. There's no account and nothing to install. It runs in your browser and keeps working even if your connection drops after the page loads.

Does it follow the 2024 rules?

The point costs are the same in the 2014 and 2024 Player's Handbook. The bonus section lets you put a +2 and a +1 on any abilities, which covers the 2024 background rule and Tasha's custom origin, and you can type your own bonuses for anything else.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The buttons are big enough to tap with a thumb and the table fits a small screen without scrolling sideways.
